Coleman Chong - March 13, 2005 Rev. Coleman Chong gave a presentation on "Dealing with Grief and Life Changes". This event was hosted by Mrs. Lisa Yee in her home with dinner and a time for fellowship. Rev. Chong's presentation covered the stages of grief and the pitfalls to avoid. The stages of grief are numbness or shock, emptiness, solitude, isolation, anxiety and anger. Solitude is a time to deal with personal grief. Time heals if you work at processing the grief rather than burying the grief. Isolation is different from solitude. In this stage one doesn't want to deal with anyone. Isolation may lead to fear, guilt and shame. Guilt is a silent killer that can kill you from the inside. Even though the stages of grief can be listed, grief is unique to each person. The pitfalls to avoid are wanting to go back, making belongings a shrine, holidays, being so sensitive that anything can make you cry, mourning to the point that you don't believe it is OK to be happy and asking "why" questions. It is not possible to go back. Make some belongings keepsakes but don't keep everything. There comes a time to let go and move on so mourning should end. Rev. Chong shared about his being numb and going through the motions of what had to be done when his father passed away. When he shared this, I realized that this was what happened to me when my father passed away. I grieved for him after all the acknowledgments of people's gifts were sent out, that is, after all the things had been done. In conclusion Rev. Chong said that pain is part of the joy that God purifies us through our trials, and that we are purified when God sees his reflection in us. Karen Hong Dinner with Pastor and Mrs. David Eng - April 17, 2005All who came enjoyed the fellowship and dinner with Pastor David and Milly. We learned a lot about how much men and women know about each other when we played the board game ‘Battle of the Sexes’. The men (this time) knew more about women than the women knew about the men. It was a funny eye opener. After a delicious fajita dinner from Pappasitos, we gathered for a time of singing before David and Milly each shared their testimonies. It was interesting and re-affirming to hear how God brought them together. (HE certainly works in mysterious ways.) We found out that David is a very good planner. Just ask David about how he proposed to Milly. So for everyone who wants to learn more about Crossroads, come join us for one of our gatherings. We always have fun, good food, and a great fellowship with each other. Barbara Lew Rockets game at Toyota Center - Feb 27, 2005The basketball game was very exciting as the lead changed hands four times and the score was tied seven times. The game was very close until the final minutes when the Rockets ran out of steam and eventually lost the game to the Utah Jazz. Despite the lost, everyone enjoyed the game. After the game, everyone went across the street to eat at China Garden Restaurant where we occupied half the restaurant. The group had ordered ahead of time and there was plenty of food to go around. As we enjoyed our dinner, we had fellowship with our special guests as well as members of the other Sunday school classes. For a brief moment our guests from Gracewood, a home for single mother families in transition, could forget about their situation and enjoy a day going to a Rocket game and having a relaxing dinner. It was Christmas again for the children as they got to attend a Rocket game and eat all they wanted for dinner. Everybody had a great time together. From a small beginning Crossroads is a group that is growing both spiritually and numerically. One of the stated goals of the group is to share and grow in Christ. Whether going to a basketball game or having dinner with one of the Pastors, your life will be enriched as we grow together in Christ. Gordon Liu
Lunch with Pastor and Mrs. CheungThe lunch with Pastor and Mrs. Cheung was very enlightening and inspiring for us as we listened to their testimonies. To see how CBC has grown from the leadership of Pastor and Mrs. Cheung, and a nucleus of a few dedicated church family members, to the "power house" our church has now turned out to be can only be a true testimony to how God had a hand in growing our first church location in downtown Houston. I find it truly amazing how God works miracles through many of his faithful followers when we choose to let God lead the way in our lives. Granted, God does give us choices in life. One can see that Pastor and Mrs. Cheung continue to let God be their only guide today. Just as in the past, God was their guide in their vision to set up a Chinese church to minister and serve the Houston Chinese community with a focus that Jesus is the only way to eternal life. In the future we will continue to fellowship and have many more inspirational speakers at our Crossroads gatherings. Please go to the church website to get the itinerary of future happenings with Crossroads. Hope to you soon at Crossroads. Alice Gee Dead Sea Scrolls Exhibit - November 7, 2004We had a wonderful time at our outing to the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit. The exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science was well attended by Crossroads members and long lines from the general public. At the exhibit earphones devices were given out so you can dial in to listen to a “station” at the exhibit. The exhibit showed the various aspects which included the discovery of the scrolls, the Essene community that produced the scrolls, the possible reasons the scrolls were hidden and the environment of the Dead Sea. The final vignettes were of the scroll segments themselves. The exhibit presented a scientific and respectful view of the Dead Sea Scrolls. The scrolls were not presented as holy relics but as containers of the word of God. The most important element was the preservation of the word of God throughout time without change. One aspect that caught my attention was the Essenes’ concept of two messiahs. From the 21st century we can understand that the Essenes did not know that the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would come in two time periods. The exhibit helped establish in our minds and spirits that the word of God has remained essentially unchanged since it was first written. The word of God stands forever. After the exhibit we finished our day fellowshipping over dinner at a near by restaurant. Alex Der Impromptu Sunday - September 19We all got in one car and went to Fu Garden on Richmond near 610. At the restaurant, we had a leisurely lunch while we enjoyed visiting with each other. We talked about future activities for Crossroads such as making your own Chinese dumplings or doing a cookie exchange. Guest speakers for year 2005 were another topic. On the way back to church, we talked about other places we want to try for lunch and going to Moody Gardens. What was the best thing about Impromptu Sunday? Spending time getting to know each other better because we took time to just sit, eat and talk. This is the planting of the seed that will grow into fellowship.
Impromptu Sunday - October 17We went to the AutoShow, GM In Motion which allowed you to test drive new cars on the parking lots around Reliant Center. The tracks were too short, but it was still fun. I drove 2 cars from a selection of domestic and import cars. I almost didn't go to the AutoShow because driving cars is not my idea of fun. I decided to give it a try because other people wanted to go. I'm glad I went. I had a good time trying out the cars and enjoyed the people I was with. I got to know them a little better because I spent this time with them. God provided a fun activity as a way for us to get better acquainted. He is building the connections for fellowship a mile at a time. Karen Hong Dinner with Pastor and Mrs. James WongSeptember 5, 2004 A good time was had by all at the very fun and informative gathering with Pastor Wong and Rosalee. What we all found enlightening was how Rosalee was the "spearhead" in getting Pastor Wong more involved with leadership functions with the church. I also liked the analogy of what Pastor Wong said about how he is the head of the family. However, Rosalee is the neck by which the family is supported. One can relate this analogy to our own church family in that we, individually, are the foundation or head of this church with GOD being the neck that supports our christian faith and fellowship with each other and with GOD. The fellowship and food were the highlights of this gathering. To be able to share and grow in Christ are the goals of our group. I especially enjoyed the seafood dish that had scallops the size of Texas. So, for those who are still searching for a group that has had some of years of experience with the "real world", then you do not need to search any further. Please continue to come back to this website for future updates of our meetings and happenings. Hope to see Y'all for the next meeting. Alice Gee A word from the Church MembersHi Karen, Thanks for sharing what the Lord is going to do thru this new ministry, Crossroads. Our prayer is that all will be greatly blessed as your relationship draws closer to Him and your witness of Christ in you increases to those in your paths. May our Lord be mightily glorified through you all. Henry and Donna. Fellowship provides God's remindersWhile standing in the corridor in the Education building with Gary waiting for our group to go out to lunch, Mitzi walked by and asked Gary if his eye exam went well. He said it did. Gary explained to me that he had been diagnosed with retinal detachment several years ago. The remedy was a scleral band operation which was successful. His description of the symptoms, flashes of light, shadows in the center of vision and "floaters", reminded me of problems that I had within the past six months. Gary gave me his doctor's number and other sources. This episode showed me how God works in our lives. I had a health issue I had ignored. Then a conversation in passing reminded me of the problem. As a result I was given information to resolve the problem. I believe God's lesson to me through this encounter is that God speaks to us through the brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. Praise the Lord for his intervention in the body of Christ! Alex Der
